Certified Nursing Assistant
Are you interested in the healthcare field? Do you like to help others? Become a Certified Nursing Assistant! Our Certified Nursing Assistant program prepares you for the NYS Certification Exam and puts you on the path to success in your new career. The program is comprised of a total of 125 hours of training (70 hours classroom, 20 hours of lab, and 35 hours of clinical) which exceeds the minimum training requirements stipulated by NYS. NYS Certification: New York State Certification is required. You will sit for the NYS exam upon successful completion of the course.
Clinical Experience: As part of this program, you will participate in a 35-hour clinical experience at a local healthcare facility.
You’ll learn:
• Infection control procedures
• Communication and interpersonal skills
• Safety and emergency procedures
• Basic nursing skills
• Personal care skills
• Mental health and social service needs
• Care of cognitively impaired residents
• Basic restorative services
• Residents’ rights
Prerequisites: Enrollment Requirements:
• At least 16 years of age
• A high school graduate, working on a G.E.D., or reading at a 9th-grade level
• In good health. Flu and Covid-19 vaccines required. MMR, Varicella, PPD, Tdap & Influenza immunization records must be provided by the first day of class
• Dependable, patient, and have a desire to help people
• Able to communicate well and have positive relationships with patients
• Attend an information session, February 24 or March 23
• Return CNA application by April 22
• Acceptance letters sent April 26
• Full tuition payment due May 10

Explore a Career as a Certified Nursing Assistant
Explore the role of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in healthcare and prepare to take the CNA course offered at Tompkins Cortland Community College in June 2024. In this program, you will learn about the clinical skills performed within the scope of CNA practice to gain a better understanding of whether this career is a strong fit for you. As part of this course, we will also cover “soft skills” that are vital to the job, including professionalism, interdisciplinary collaboration, effective communication with coworkers and patients, as well as interpersonal skills. Basic hands-on technical skills will be taught in the TC3 Nursing Program Skills Laboratory, with a strong focus on safety and patient care.
To support you in your career development, you will also use the College’s online Career Connections Modules to research the CNA occupation and potential career pathways within the healthcare industry, how to effectively search for related job opportunities. Further, you will be introduced to the apprenticeship model and funding opportunities available to support your education.
