CEMI307  –  Adolescent Self-Injurious Behavior -- Understanding the Dynamics, Identifying the Risk Factors, and Developing Counseling Strategies

The challenges that face today’s youth are oftentimes quite stressful – peer pressure, substance abuse, violence, pressure to excel, and more. As a result, teens may engage in coping strategies that are unhealthy and potentially dangerous. Self-injurious behavior is one such strategy that is not uncommon in teen culture. As clinicians, it is imperative that we understand the dynamics surrounding this behavior, the warning signs and risk factors associated with self-injury, and effective strategies to engage and support those we work with. Through large and small group activities, and discussion, you will learn about adolescent development and self-injurious behavior, strategies of engagement, and effective therapeutic methods designed to address this issue. Upon completion of this workshop, you will:
    • Increase understanding of adolescent development
    • Increase knowledge of warning signs and risk factors
    • Understand dynamics associated with self-injurious behavior
    • Attain additional counseling strategies
    • Increase comfort and competency pertaining to clinical skills
