A variety of topics related to working with transgender clients and their families will be covered. You will discuss:
    • Basic concepts and language related to gender diversity and gender transition
    • Specific interventions for working with transgender clients at various stages of the lifespan including: transgender youth and their families, transgender couples, and transgender parents
    • A gender-affirmative model that lays the foundation for all of these interventions and strategies for advocacy in schools, workplaces, and other settings

CEMI305  –  Social Work with Refugees in CNY

Gain a better understanding of social work and service delivery with refugee populations, specifically those living in the Central New York region. Currently, there are an estimated 65 million displaced people living worldwide. Twenty-one million of those are identified as refugees. Their experiences likely include the devastating effects of war, torture, religious persecution, economic extortion, and relocation. As war and crisis continue to occur around the globe, social workers will continue to see an increased number of resettled refugees requiring services. It is imperative that we work towards achieving an awareness of their needs to foster the recovery process. Upon completion of the workshop, you will:
    • Demonstrate an understanding and use of culturally competent practice with specific refugee populations
    • Demonstrate understanding of ethnic/racial differences in expressing and ameliorating psychosocial dysfunction
    • Demonstrate understanding of the power of the therapeutic relationship and self-awareness, and apply such knowledge to clinical practice including interventions and treatment planning

Exposure-based treatments have a high success rate to address anxiety related disorders and phobias. You will explore the development and presentation of anxiety related disorders and phobias, and identify how distorted patterns get reinforced. Practitioners will be introduced to exposure-based treatment and practice it so they can use it in their practice. Some practice will occur between the two class sessions. Upon completion of the workshop, you will:
    • Understand development and presentation of anxiety disorders
    • Identify reinforces of anxiety disorders
    • Understand reasoning for exposure approach
    • Initial ability to present material to patients

CEMI307  –  Adolescent Self-Injurious Behavior -- Understanding the Dynamics, Identifying the Risk Factors, and Developing Counseling Strategies

The challenges that face today’s youth are oftentimes quite stressful – peer pressure, substance abuse, violence, pressure to excel, and more. As a result, teens may engage in coping strategies that are unhealthy and potentially dangerous. Self-injurious behavior is one such strategy that is not uncommon in teen culture. As clinicians, it is imperative that we understand the dynamics surrounding this behavior, the warning signs and risk factors associated with self-injury, and effective strategies to engage and support those we work with. Through large and small group activities, and discussion, you will learn about adolescent development and self-injurious behavior, strategies of engagement, and effective therapeutic methods designed to address this issue. Upon completion of this workshop, you will:
    • Increase understanding of adolescent development
    • Increase knowledge of warning signs and risk factors
    • Understand dynamics associated with self-injurious behavior
    • Attain additional counseling strategies
    • Increase comfort and competency pertaining to clinical skills

Motivational interviewing is a cross-discipline and goal-setting approach that increases success rates for patients and reduces burnout for staff. You will be introduced to the spirit and framework for motivational interviewing, and learn the “story” of stages of change and skill set needed to dance with motivation. You will practice this technique in this interactive program. Upon completion of the workshop, you will:
